Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. changed the face of American history. His passion for nonviolent action empowered a nation of individuals to embark on a journey that would spur the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King, Jr. was born in Atlanta in 1929 and quickly rose to prominence. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at age 35. He found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 and served as its president until his death in 1968. Dr. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.
